Leave from Kumarakom
Kumarakom (16 km from Kottayam) is located on Vembanad Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Kerala. Home to a widevariety of flora and fauna, it's a nature lover's paradise. Vembanad Lake is a natural habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species such as Pearl Spot Fish which provides Keralites with their favorite traditional local delicacy.
Kumarakom is a birdwatcher/ornithologist paradise. Situated on one of the primary migratory routes of south India, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, extending over 14 acres, is one of the most visited bird sanctuaries in India. Birds come from as far away as the Himalayas and Siberia. Early morning risers will be rewarded with the flying flocks of the region take off over Vembanad Lake in search of food.
Kumarakom's perfectly balanced tropical climate is highly conducive to pleasant year-round travel. With its expanses of mangrove forests, paddy fields and coconut groves, the lushness of nature's canopy lining the banks of Lake Vembanad creates an escape into a cool tropical shade.
Leave from Alleppey
Alleppey is often referred to as "The Venice of the East" and "The Rice Bowl of Kerala" - both aptly describing this unique part of the backwater region. Hugging the coast of the Arabian Sea with offshoots of lagoons and canals in most every direction, the backwaters of Alleppey are a never ending adventure of exploration and surprise. Cultivation of rice takes place below sea level and the vast blankets of rice paddies surrounding the Alleppey region add to the mysticism and intense colorful beauty of any houseboat tour through the Alleppey backwaters.
One need never leave the houseboat as everything comes to the you. Choose your nightly meal from floating fish markets and vegetable vendors, buy a tender coconut off a wooden raft and drink the sweet nectar of nature's perfect beverage. Spend the day people-watching as you observe how life gets lived on the water.
The world famous Snake Boat Races take place in Alleppey every year from July to September. If your travel dates coincide then this spectacular event should not be missed..
