Getting to Delhi

Delhi, of course, is loaded with dining options. Leh is very limited but quite good nonetheless - lots of simple Tibetan fare along with a smattering of Western style food.

Day 1 : Arrive in Delhi

You will be greeted at the airport by a Tour Packages India Representative and then escorted to your hotel by private AC car. As the check-in is facilitated by the desk staff you will be briefed on the tour program after which you'll be escorted to your room where you'll spend the next two nights.

Day 2: Delhi

After breakfast, embark on a day of sightseeing around Delhi. Delhi is said to be one of the oldest existing cities in the world, along with Damascus and Varanasi. Legend estimates it to be over 5,000 years old - it is said to have been built and destroyed 11 times throughout its history. In spite of its rich historical heritage represented by its innumerable monuments, Delhi's population is reputed for having little awareness of or pride in the city's history due to the simple reason that few Delhi residents actually belong to Delhi. The population of Delhi is a heterogeneous mix of people originating from every corner of India. Undoubtedly, this will become obvious during your tour through the city. Delhi is by far the most cosmopolitan city in India and a true traveler's delight.

Day 3: Delhi to Leh (via Air)

Transfer back to the airport to catch your flight to Leh. This particular flight has to be one of the most magnificent in all of India. Catch the morning light rising across the Himalayan mountain range. Upon arrival in Leh (elev. 3,500 m / 10,500 ft), you'll be transported to your hotel. Take the day to rest and acclimatize.

Day 4: Leh

Today's activities will be centered around monasteries. After breakfast, visit the praying ceremony at Thiksey Monastery for the praying ceremony. Further on visit the Hemis Monastery, considered to be one of the most famous monasteries in the region. Enroute back to Leh, stop off at the Shey Palace, more than 5 centuries old it's the former Palace of the Kings of Ladakh. Spend the night in Leh.

Day 5: Leh to Likir (2 hour drive)

Travel via jeep to Likir where you'll pay a visit to the Likir Monastery which was built in the 11th century. Later, drive to the village of Likir and spend the evening relaxing and enjoying the panoramic views. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: Likir to Yantang (5 hour trek)

After breakfast, trek into the arid terrain of mountain deserts. Ascend to Pobela, Sumdo Village, and up to the summit of Charastsela. If time permits, visit the Rizong Monastery. Overnight camping.

Day 7: Yangtang to Hemis Shukpachen (4 hour trek)

Trek to Wulle Valley and ascend to Sermanchanla and then descend to the village of Hemis Shukpachen. Visit the beautiful Gompa. Overnight camping.

Day 8: Hemis Shukpachen to Tingmosgam (5 hour trek)

Climb the summit of Meptekla and then descend to Ang Village which leads to Tingmosgam. The valley is rich in apricots, apples and nuts; extraordinary housing architecture. Check-in to your hotel.

Day 9: Tingmosgam to Lamayuru to Alchi

After breakfast, drive to the one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, the Lamayuru. In the evening drive to Alchi to visit its monastery and to spend the night at the hotel.

Day 10: Alchi to Leh

Explore the countryside of Alchi before departing for Leh. Enroute, visit Basgo Fort. Later, check-in to the hotel.

Day 11 & 12: Leh

These two days are filled with visits and excursions to the most popular monasteries of the area such as Shanker Gompa and Shanti Stupa. A full day excursion to Stakhna Monastery on the banks of the Indus with a visit to Stok Palace on the way back to the hotel. Evenings are to be enjoyed in Leh.

Day 13: Leh to Khardongla Peak to Nubra (148 km / 4 hour drive)

Depart for Nubra Valley via Khardongla Pass which, at elev. 5,600 meters, is the highest motorable pass in the world. Stop at the top to enjoy the view. Check-in to your camping resort. Later visit Diskit Monastery, more than 5 centuries old, located on a hilltop offering a panoramic view of the valley. Also, pay a visit to Smastalling Monastery and the Panamic hot sulpher spring. In the evening return the camp site.

Day 14: Nubra Valley

Spend the day sightseeing. Nubra Valley rests at elev 10,000 ft. in a desert conditions. Rainfall is rare and so is vegetation which crops up along river beds or irrigated villages which produce wheat, barley, peas, and fruts and nuts. And, of course, interesting monasteries to visit along the way. Overnight camping.

Day 15: Nubra to Leh (148 km / 4 hour drive)

Drive back to Leh after breakfast, check-in, and spend the day as you like.

Day 16: Leh

A day's excursion to the ancient monasteries of Chemdy and Dakhtok. Return to Leh in the evening. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 17: Leh

Spend the day as you like. (See "Local Attractions" for things to do.)

Day 18: Leh to Delhi (via Air)

Catch the flight back to Delhi. Assistance offered to facilitate your onward journey.
